Brent Stait Talks “Dr. Fate”
Posted by Nessa • No Comments »

Brent Stait talks “Absolute Justice” and Dr. Fate with Jim Beard with “Sherman Scoops Sin City”. Read a snippet of Brent chatting about working with the Smallville cast:

JIM: Conversely, what was it like coming into the SMALLVILLE universe and working with its well-seasoned cast and crew?
BRENT:
Well, they were great. Really. They’ve been together for a long time and they’re a well-oiled machine. They’re really easy to work with and very generous. Tom [Welling], as an actor and a director – he directed the second half – he’s really good as both. He talks to you like what he’s thinking as an actor. He talks to you about things that actors talk about, not just the shots and stuff like that. He takes time and talks about character and motivation in this scene and objectives and things like that.

JIM: And you think that all comes from Tom also being an actor?
BRENT:
Yeah, ‘cause he kind of grew up on the set, right? I think you kind of learn about cameras and angles and lighting, you can learn about that technically, but you can’t really be taught how to work with actors, you have to experience that. And that definitely, I think, comes out of his experience, because I think he’s very relaxed and chilled out on set. He doesn’t freak out or go into shock (laughs) or any of that. He’s an old seasoned pro as a director, as far as I was concerned. Very easy to work with. He lets you try things, like let your actors do their acting, which is very important I think. It was great.

Great interview – read it in it’s entirety here.

Hawkman Taking Flight in “Absolute Justice”
Posted by Nessa • No Comments »

Two more days folks – can you stand it?! I know I can’t! In the meantime, keep the “Absolute Justice” news coming!

Michael Shanks spoke with Jenna Busch with “Newsarama” about the Smallville event coming up this Friday. Read a snippet below regarding Clark and Hawkgirl:

Newsarama: Everyone is wondering what sort of advice you’ll be giving to Clark (Tom Welling) and if you’ll discuss anything about Hawkgirl.
Shanks:
Um, in the original draft of the script there was some illusion to what the past relationship was with Hawkgirl, specific about what happened to her and how this affected Carter and whatnot. And there’s references to her that are left in the script that are dealt with and you get the point without having to talk too much and without having to explain too much. It’s talked about with Clark, it’s talked about with Oliver at different points without getting too, too detailed about the goings on. But it is a weight that Carter Hall wears around his neck. He talks about that with Clark, both at the middle and at the end of the show, and it’s affect on him, but there is no particular correlation between Clark and his relationships that Carter draws a parallel between. You could draw a parallel to Oliver’s sense of detachment, which I think is part of their agreeing to disagree or at least teaching each other something.

Michael Shanks Flies High as Smallville’s Hawkman!
Posted by Nessa • No Comments »

Michael Shanks talks Hawkman and Absolute Justice with”Moviehole” – read a snippet below:

What can fans of the Justice Society Of America, and Hawkman in general, expect from this two-hour Smallville movie event?
Michael Shanks:
Wow! Could you find a more general question? (Laughs) I could talk for hours about what their expectations should be. They are going to get a lot of Hawkman’s backstory. There is an appearance by nearly every single member of the Justice Society. Some more than others, obviously. Fans can expect true-to-form characterizations. What Geoff Johns wrote for Hawkman, and what I intended to do with him, was stay loyal to the comic book personality of Carter Hall. There are some interesting twists and turns when it comes to Kent Nelson and Star Girl. The first hour is cool like the other side of the pillow. It sucks you in because of all the intriguing elements. Then the episode picks up with more action as it rolls along. There will certainly be some Smallville elements with Lois and Clark thrown in. In terms of the JSA, there is a lot of backstory. There is a lot of angst and pathos. There is some good resolution at the end as well. We will be seeing a few of our all-time favorite characters in action. Which is a lot of fun.

Pilot Intel: The CW Orders Tom Welling-Produced Drama
Posted by Nessa • 2 Comments »

This in from EW’s Ausiello – The CW picked up a Tom Welling-produced pilot:

Tom Welling may be back on The CW next season — at least as a producer. The network has picked up a Welling-produced dramedy pilot set in world of competitive college cheerleading titled Hellcats. It’s Election meets Bring it On.

You thinking what I’m thinking? ‘Cause I’m thinking there may be Smallville-related strings attached to this deal. But that’s pure speculation on my part.

Wow, congratulations to Tom – I’m extremely happy for him! I just hope this doesn’t mean we’ll see less of him now on screen!

Smallville Executive Producer Reveals “JSA” Secrets
Posted by Nessa • No Comments »

“Newarama” has a great interview from Smallville executive producer, Brian Peterson, where he reveals some “Absolute Justice” secrets. Here’s a teaser:

“The Justice Society differs from the Legion because they are older and a little more world weary,” adds Winter. “Not so much Stargirl, but Hawkman and Doctor Fate. The Legion were modern day fanboys, but the JSA are more of a mystery of a bygone chapter. How it connected with our Smallville universe was we have a hero on the rise, finding himself, and discovering what being a hero is all about. For Clark, it’s about interacting with these characters who have already experienced what he’s experiencing, but in a different era. Plus, they were outed very disrespectfully. It fit perfectly where Clark is in his journey right now. He is able to learn a lot from these guys and the way Geoff was able to weave them into the universe was really well done.”

Also, a couple of days ago I posted a link to part one of Michael Shank’s audio interview on Sci-Fi Media Zone”. You can now read the transcript from that interview on “Michael Shanks Online” here. Thanks to “Shelby” for the heads up on this one!
