Very sad news – it’s been officially announced that Smallville will end next season:

Discretion and restraint are clearly not among Tom Welling’s superpowers.

The CW was hoping to announce at its upfront presentation Thursday that next season of Smallville — the show’s 10th — would be its last. But Welling — who was expected to deliver said announcement in person — jumped the gun and blabbed it to the press last night.

“Season 10 of Smallville will be the last season,” Welling told HollywoodLife.com last night at an event in Beverly Hills.

That noise you hear is Dawn Ostroff frantically searching for her blue kryptonite dagger.

I guess we all kind of knew this was a possibility, but I’m still feeling very somber with this news.

I’m very sad :( I need a Tom Welling fix every week. I hope he concentrates on his movie career instead of directing/producing. I couldn’t stand not being able to see him.

Hey Mishelle,

Smallville has NOT been canceled – it’s ending. So the ratings won’t have anything to do with the show staying on the air.

A spinoff, like the rumored “Metropolis” would be awesome, but nothing has been mentioned about that. :(

Hey Trevor,

I was too…but I was still very sad to hear the announcement this morning. To reiterate what E! Online mentioned in their article…props to The CW for giving Smallville an extra season to tie up the story. We definitely don’t want all the long invested years of the show on the air to end in a rushed finale.

I’m going to savor every minute of every episode of season ten!

Hey Monita,

ME TOO! I’m very happy for Tom moving into other avenues of the business…I mean heck…he’s good at his craft! But like you, I feel sad that it may mean not seeing him any longer on our television screens.

We all saw this coming, I mean when season 8 was on, many thought it was it’s last, but it wasn’t.

I’m just glad that there will be an “epic” season 10.

A spin-off would be so cool! If not, The CW or Warner Bros. should consider making a TV-Movie after the 10th season.

Hey Ely,

I remember that too! I was so excited when we got season nine…and then season ten – that’s an amazing run for a television show!

I’m looking forward to other Smallville annoucements they may have during The CW’s Upfronts in New York tomorrow.

Sad news. At least now they can write season 10 knowing how to end it. Tom can have a little more freedom now. Who knows, maybe we will see more of him than we think!

Re: Nessa

This up-coming season 10 will be a landmark in sci-fi genre television.

There are just so many things that the writers can come up with, the only problem that bothers me is those episodes in every season that aren’t necessary.

For example in this past season 9 we’ve had, in my opinion, ‘Rabid’, ‘Disciple’, ‘Escape,’ that were just not needed. That the writers could have spent a little bit more time to come up with better story-lines.

I hope the storyline, episodes, in season 10 will be perfected by the writers. ;)

- Writers, start flipping them comics!

Hey Lilash,

I hope you’re right!

Yeah, I would imagine it would be hard for Tom to do other projects while he’s working on Smallville, so you’re right – it will give him more freedom to spread his wings and venture in other projects. After ten years of playing the same character…I’m sure he’s more than ready. I just hope it won’t be strictly behind the scenes. Like Monita mentioned earlier…I definitely need my weekly Tommy fix.

Hey Ely,

You definitely bring up a great point! Although I have to say I loved “Rabid” and “Escape” because it mainly focused on Clark and Lois’ relationship, they were basically filler episodes…but every season had a few of those.

I totally agree with you, especially since this will be the last season.

I’m really hoping they bring back a few characters to tie up their stories as well, such as Lex, Kara, Lana, Brainiac, Martha and all of the Justice League members.

I’m still so sad about the news though. I’m really going to miss the show once it’s finally over. :(

Re: Ness

It would be so awesome if they bring back Kara, she was one of my favorite characters on Smallville! The way she left in season 8, searching for Kandor… should have brought her back for season 9.

- Yeah, they really should bring back all those characters, if not as season regulars, then as season guest stars, or something!

- I’m so excited! (For the 10th season!) :)

Hey Ely,

Definitely…at least for an episode or two! ;)
