Alexander “Lex” Luthor was the billionaire CEO of LuthorCorp, and the main villian throughout the series.

Lex and Clark started out as good friends, after Clark saved Lex in a car accident in the pilot episode.  But as the show progressed, and in the final years of Lex and Clark’s relationship, Lex finally and decisively turned to darkness. He used his company’s assets and resources to fund questionable and most likely illegal scientific research on cloning and alien intelligence.

Lex also purchased the Daily Planet in Metropolis, and used his power as CEO to kill stories and fire reporters.

In the episode, Arctic, the season 7 finale, Lex finally discovered Clark’s secret.  After placing the Orb (a Kryptonian device created by Jor-El to control Clark Kent in the event that he turned against humanity) in the console, The Fortress of Solitude collaspsed on both Lex and Clark.  Lex survived the destruction of the Fortress, but is being kept alive by machines and a project intended for his survival, “Project Prometheus”.
